Tongkat Ali is a herb (also known as Longjack or Eurycoma longifolia), used in traditional medicine in South East Asia.

Contemporary and ongoing research is investigating if and how Tongkat Ali’s compounds may support hormone activity, particularly male hormones, such as testosterone.

Testosterone is a crucial hormone for both men (and women), and it's levels naturally decline as we get older, typically starting around the age of 30. Maintaining adequate testosterone levels is essential for various aspects of health and well-being, such as energy levels, libido, muscle mass and overall physical performance. Low testosterone has also been associated with symptoms of depression and fatigue.

A 2018 study investigated the safety and efficacy of Eurycoma longifolia in combination with multivitamins, with 93 participants, aged 25-65 over a 24-week period, and the male participants experienced double the increase of free testosterone levels vs placebo group (George et al, 2018). Free testosterone levels is a measure of bioavailable testosterone.

A 2021 study on older males, specifically 105 male subjects aged 50-70 years, observed statistically significant increases in total testosterone levels for individuals supplementing with a Eurycoma longifolia extract, after week 12 in a lower dosage intake, and week 4 in a higher dosage group. Lower free and total testosterone concentrations are significantly common in older males, and it is associated with a reduced quality of life (Chinnappan et al, 2021).
